About ecLabNote

Are you tired of fumbling through notebook after notebook to find the right experiment? Does the research get lost when the student leaves? Have you spent hours to decipher the old postdoc's handwriting? Then start using an electronic lab notebook!

Does the setup and cost of traditional ELNs scare you? Are you lacking the infrastructure to keep servers backed up and secure? Then start using ecLabNote!

ecLabNote is developed with the synthetic organic chemist in mind in close collaboration with the University of Gothenburg. The main focus is ease of use and the avoidance of the hassle with server setups, maintenance, and backups which all too often constitute a too big hurdle for academic groups and small companies.

Another major goal was to achieve cross-platform performance and since ecLabNote is run completely in the browser it can be used on all platforms, including iPhone and iPad.

Technical Details

  • ecLabNote runs completely in your browser with no plugins. This means that it runs out of the box on all major computers and platforms.
  • ecLabNote is a hosted service, running on secure servers. This eliminates the need for local server hardware, setup, installation and backups.
  • Group admin can easily administer user accounts.
  • All changes to an experiment are recorded and can be viewed in a history view.
  • The experiments are fully searchable, including substructure searches.

ecLabNote Open

Open Notebook Science is a concept coined by the late Jean-Claude Bradley to denote science where the experimental results are published real-time in an open lab notebook.

... there is a URL to a laboratory notebook that is freely available and indexed on common search engines. It does not necessarily have to look like a paper notebook but it is essential that all of the information available to the researchers to make their conclusions is equally available to the rest of the world

At ecLabNote, we find this idea very attractive, and we are therefore offering ecLabNote for free for any group who is willing to go fully open! In our version, that means that the experimental record is published with a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY), free for anyone to reuse as they see fit as long as the original author is acknowledged.

If you find this as attractive as we do, please contact us for further discussions at info@eclabnote.com or check out the already opened experiments.

It's also possible to only open up specific experiments to share with outside colleagues or just spread the word on your work!
